Core Engagement Factors

There are two types of engagement factors that we have found to exist in the workplace. Our model is very similar to Herzberg’s two-factor model as explained in Bolman and Deal (2008).1 The first type of engagement factor is a “core” factor. We define “core” as a primary or essential factor in engagement. These are the basic necessities that must exist for employees to be productive in the work environment such as:
• Information and training
• Tools
• Supplies
• Appropriate policies and procedures
• Capable manager
• Reasonable benefits
• Compensation
