The clash of ideas and ideologies over hydrocarbons within and without corporate oil has deep roots in a contested past. The battle lines have sharpened, and in the post-Cold War confusion among nation states, as world political schisms have realigned, both antagonists (some modern barbarians) and corporate oil have searched for new strategy.

On one side is a social composite of aligned groups hostile to oil; on the other are companies that have sought to shape responses to deflect the critics and their concerns, or at least those perceived by the corporate world as merited. Both claim to be right. For many there is no middle ground.
