7Emerging empires

We have examined corporate oil in relation to the American empire (Chapter 5) and generic constraints on the industry (Chapter 6). We should equally consider the industry in relation to the competitive and emerging empires of oil. We focus here on Russia (especially), China, Iran and Venezuela – though there are likewise lesser powers in the global landscape (as mini-empires or incipient empires of oil).

First, however, a word of caution is advised. Many of the developments taking place in the new paradigm have worked against Western corporate oil.
