Which side of the family to spend Christmas with, where to go on holiday, what colour to decorate the room, what time to leave the party, how to do a particular job at work. We’re often faced with decisions that require a compromise.

There are a variety of situations when negotiating a compromise is the best way forward; when a situation requires a quick decision, for example, or when splitting the difference is the fair and best solution to a potential deadlock, or when the importance of maintaining relationships is more important than the outcome of the disagreement.
