Swimmers who are caught in a rip tide and feel themselves being dragged out to sea often panic and try to swim against the current. Typically, they use up all their energy, exhaust themselves, get a cramp and drown. The advice to swimmers in this situation is not to resist, but instead, accept the situation, and let the current take them out to sea. Within a few hundred meters the current will weaken and the swimmer can swim around and back to shore.
