RECOGNISING BELIEFS AND EXPECTATIONS ABOUT EMOTIONS

Whether we’re aware of it or not, we all hold beliefs about what emotions mean and what would happen if we and other people did or didn’t express particular emotions.

As we grew up, many of us learned that to feel and express certain emotions was ‘bad’ or ‘wrong’. Our emotions may have been ignored by others, derided, belittled or denied. This would have done little to teach us about understanding and managing feelings and emotions.

If, for example, you were reprimanded for expressing anger or jealousy when you were younger, you may now attempt to suppress, ignore or deny those feelings when they arise.
