Chapter 25

Debugging

Abstract

This chapter explores the various ways to debug real-time embedded programs. Although traditional program debugging techniques are covered, a special emphasis is put on techniques for debugging programs that cannot be halted due to real-time interfaces.

Tools such as simulators, emulators, debuggers, and the CCS profile tool are included in this chapter. In addition, using test equipment like a scope or logic analyzer is covered. The use of an in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) connection for both programming and debugging is detailed.

This chapter also explains how to use debugging tools for design verification.

Examples and exercises are for the popular PIC® microcontroller manufactured by Microchip.
