Indexing Methods

Abstract

Indexing involves preparation of a retrieval aid for the users to enable them to identify their relevant literature easily and speedily. The process or the method used for doing this work is often termed as indexing method, indexing system or indexing technique. The different elements of indexing are: key terms, principles of term order, controlled vocabulary, and arrangement of index entries. There are mainly two types of indexing methods, viz., Assigned and Derived. In assigned indexing a specially created artificial indexing language is used instead of the language of the document.
