Controlled Vocabulary (CV)

Abstract

In subject indexing, vocabulary plays a very important role since the subject matters of respective documents are represented by words or terms which are constituents of the vocabulary of the language used in indexing. The difficulties of using natural language in indexing have given rise to the concept of Controlled Vocabulary (CV). A CV is an authoritative list of terms to be used in indexing. There are different types of CV such as subject authority list, taxonomy, subject heading list, classification scheme, and thesaurus (more specifically information retrieval thesaurus).
