One of the bestselling nonfiction books in the 1970s was Robert J. Ringer’s Winning Through Intimidation. It’s a catchy title, although Ringer wasn’t actually advocating that readers try to win through intimidation; he was arguing that the world is full of predators, and they will try to win through intimidation. The world doesn’t work the way we’d like it to, Ringer argues, and it’s dangerous to assume that people are fair, honest, and aboveboard.
