Discovery systems, layers and tools, and the role of the electronic resources librarian

Abstract:

Until recently, libraries were the primary places where people went to find and retrieve information resources. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, however, commercial search engines such as Google quickly became the standard to which library search tools were compared, and it was often a painful comparison for libraries. In the past few years libraries have been able to provide users with search tools that begin to approximate the ease and immediate gratification of Google, and these tools have changed the dynamic of technical services.
