Getting your EHR off to the right start

On day one, you don’t just waltz in, flip a switch, and hope for the best. Instead, you express guidance and calm nerves to make sure your employees are prepared for go-live. A pre–go-live meeting to walk everyone through the process one last time and answer questions may be helpful, too.

tip.eps The go-live morning meeting is a great place to allow everyone to share their anxiety so you can address employees’ fears and concerns.

Depending on your vendor and overall training strategy, you may elect to conduct some final training on the morning of go-live. This can serve as a final refresher course to make sure everyone remembers the new workflows and major functionalities of the EHR. Again, taking time to calm any jitters is never a bad idea.

When you open for business on go-live day, the months of hard work become a reality and you begin to serve patients by using the EHR. Follow these patient-related tips during the go-live and the weeks that follow:

Remember to tell patients that you’re going live with a new EHR. Patients are part of this journey, too.

Stay positive. No one benefits if you display a negative outlook. Patients are concerned with their health issues, not whether you’re using a new EHR.
