Incorporating workflows and functionality into training

Training is about much more than just learning to click a button or tab, or navigate to a section in your EHR. Valuable training addresses how you and your practice deliver care and how that care delivery process is affected by the new EHR. Usually, most questions after you turn on the system relate to workflow and processes, not system functionality.

The vendor doesn’t know your specific office processes; they need your help to identify, modify, and incorporate your workflows into training. Someone from your staff should participate in each of the training classes, take on the responsibility of answering workflow questions, and help the vendor teach those workflows.

Most, if not all, vendor systems allow you to accomplish the same task several ways. Make decisions for the practice about which way to train. If you train multiple ways, the training will likely confuse your colleagues and staff rather than help prepare them to use the EHR.

Understanding the Vendor’s Role in Training

Luckily, the responsibility of training doesn’t solely rest on your shoulders. The vendor can and should be an active participant in the process, leading the way and offering a wide variety of training options that best serve your staff’s needs.
