Separation of Losses of an Induction Motor

The following losses occur in an induction motor in addition to the I2R loss.

  1. Brush friction loss = Pb
  2. Eddy current loss = Pe
  3. Hysteresis loss = Ph
  4. Pulsation loss = Pp
  5. Mechanical losses in windage and bearing friction = Pf

The rotor core loss at standstill is Pe2 + Ph2 when the rotor is open circuited. This loss at any slip ‘s’ becomes s2Pe2 + sPh2. The pulsation loss occurs at high frequency in the stator and rotor which is produced due to variations of gap reluctance when the tooth tips pass each other. Using no-load loss test, the brush friction loss can be separated.
