Developing the Staging Plan

Let’s look at a typical approach when designing a staging plan/floor plan/setting plan.

Organizing the studio layout

• First break the production down into its basic scenes, acts, or sequences (check the running order).

• How many settings are needed?

• Are any ysed more than once? Can any be reused from different angles, or revamped for other scenes?

• Sketch scale plans of possible designs for settings, showing the main features (windows, doors, staircases, etc.) on pieces of tracing paper. Check that they really are to scale; e.g. no ‘miniature furniture’ suggesting that there is plenty of space.

• Arrange these scale overlays of settings around the studio plan in the shooting order – to avoid unnecessary moves ...
