Where you position cameras to get the best shot opportunities largely depends on the subject and the action. But there are certainly two very poor general approaches:

Continuous straight-on shots. Here you set up the camera directly in front of the subject, and rely on zoom lens adjustments to vary the-shot size. The result can be mechanical and quite boring to watch. Sometimes, two-frontal cameras are used side by side, intercutting wide and close shots; but again, this can produce very routine results.

Where you have to shoot continuous action with one camera, you can create visual variety by frequent changes in shot size and camera viewpoint.
