Hypothetically, you shouldn’t move on to the next shot until your audience has absorbed the information, or the action is completed.

• If you don’t hold a shot long enough, you may leave the viewers intrigued, puzzled, or frustrated.

• Hold it too long, and their attention wanders.

• In practice, various factors influence how long you retain any shot: how interesting it is, the action within it, how important the shot is to the program’s development, the prevailing mood, and so on.
