Defining the Shot

Over the years, a universal system for classifying shots has evolved. Terms vary, but those used here are the versions you are most likely to meet.

Getting the shot

Fundamentally, when we refer to a particular type of shot, we are indicating how much of the screen is being filled by the subject; how close it appears to be. We are concerned with its effect – not how you actually get it. For instance, you can get a close shot on a close wide angle lens or a distant narrow angle lens. The perspective, distortion and camera handling will be very different, but the shot size and depth of field will be the same.
