Why Zoom?

If, as we have just seen, the zoom lens can be troublesome to use, why is it virtually universal? The answer is, that in the right hands it is a valuable tool. But used casually, it, can lead to strange visual effects and slipshod techniques.

The effect of zooming

If you adjust the lens angle while on shot, it produces the familiar effect of ‘zooming’.

Widening the angle ‘zooms out’.

Narrowing the angle ‘zooms in’.

Superficially, it seems as if the camera is moving, but look carefully. You will see that it is only magnifying and reducing the same image, Objects in the scene are not hidden or revealed as they are when we move around in the natural world (paraliactic movement with a ‘normal’ lens angle of around 24°.
