Managing Your Monsters

So, you have a monster in your meeting. And you’re ready to do something about it. Here are some tips:

1. Address Their Actions, not Their Personality. Discuss what they did, not who they are. “When you consistently come late to our meetings and sit silently with your arms folded …:” It’s a lot easier to change behavior than personality.

2. Don’t Jump to Conclusions. If Jonas comes late to a meeting and sits silently throughout the meeting, there is no reason to address his behavior at this point. He may have just come from another meeting where there were problems, or just found out he has to be out of town and will miss his son’s birthday, or maybe he’s just having a bad day.
