Chapter 12. Conclusions
In March 1882, George Parmalee set a cotton-spinning factory on fire in Bolton, England. He did so as part of a sales pitch to try and convince factory managers to buy sprinkler systems. “In 90 seconds, flames and billows of thick black smoke engulfed the mill. After two minutes, 32 automated sprinklers kicked in and extinguished the fire.”[1] At the time, many managers were as uncertain about spending money on fire sprinklers as some information technology and corporate managers are uncertain or reluctant to spend money on computer security today.
