The previous section indicated how widely damage estimates can vary for computer incidents. Unfortunately, as stated earlier, no single equation may be used to calculate the damages when an incident has occurred. The best approach is to identify all costs that result from the incident, then add those costs to determine a total. Even though this task sounds easy, it may not be when you take all the possible areas of expense into account. This section provides some guidance on ways that damages may be categorized and should help with identifying costs that may have not been previously considered.
