An intrusion detection system (IDS) and an intrusion prevention system (IPS) are common tools in a secure network. In an on-premise environment, they are not so easy or cheap to implement, because you need dedicated hardware, and also a network structure that accommodates this feature. By contrast, in AWS, using only one feature of the VPC service, you can enable and disable these tools whenever and wherever you consider appropriate. You can have these tools at three levels of your network:
- The VPC level
- The subnet level
- The elastic network interface (ENI) level
