1. The region also suffers from the legacy of an unfortunate self-destructive geo-politics. Thus, while the military expenditures in South Asia increased by 54 per cent from 1992 to 2001, for the world as a whole such expenditure decreased by 9 per cent during the same period.

2. Other approaches to free or preferential trade in South Asia include, (1) India’s unilateral initiatives, (2) India’s bilateral approaches with Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka, and (3) regional approaches, namely, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal Growth Quadrangle BBIN and BIMSTEC.
