Comparison of CCD Size and Film Apertures

The chart at right is a life-size drawing showing the relative sizes of different CCDs and how they compare with the image area on 16mm and 35mm film.

CCDs are measured diagonally. So a 1/2" chip is measured along opposite corners. The aspect ratio is 4:3, which is the same as a 1.33:1 film gate.

Notice how 16mm and the 1/2" CCD are the same.

The amazing thing is how small a 1/4" CCD really is.

In case you’re wondering, 16mm and 35mm are measurements of the width of the film, including sprocket area.
