Preface

Why Read This Book?

Making a good film is more affordable, and open to a wider range of people, than ever before. The reason is digital video.

If you have access to a digital video camera and a computer (you don’t need to own them, you just need access), you can make professional-quality work. You don’t need lots of cash, nor do you need a relative who owns a major studio. You just need a good story, and enough technical skill to realize your vision. This book walks you through all the details of making a video project, from start to finish, and shows you step-by-step how to master the advanced digital video technology at your disposal.

Audience

If you’re inspired to make a film and share it with an audience, this book is for you. I walk you through the process of making a film: from lighting and framing a shot to setting up your own postproduction studio and refining your work into a finished product that you share with the world. Along the way, I describe scenes from films ranging from Blade Runner and When Harry Met Sally to The Conversation and La Jetée to introduce key concepts and explore examples of particular techniques. (I even reference the work of Looney Tunes creator Chuck Jones, because he used techniques that are highly relevant to digital postproduction.)

If you’re a professional looking for a leg up, an educator who teaches digital media, or a video enthusiast looking to bulk up on your skills, this book was written with you in mind.
