A DYNASTY IN WAITING
1. AN ARISTOCRAT MEETS THE BANKERS
Wilmington, despite its smallness and relaxed atmosphere, is not a town where pinstripe suits are noticed. There are too many business visitors to Du Pont’s headquarters for that to happen. But if there was ever a time when it would have behooved Delawareans to know of the arrival of a certain group of men, it was on June 11, 1980. On that day, Irving Shapiro hosted some powerful visitors. They were all bankers from New York, from one bank, in fact—Chase Manhattan. They had travelled without notice or fanfare to the small city beside the Delaware to hold an extraordinary conference that would affect the lives of millions of Americans, and perhaps the future of the nation.
