On January 21, 1902, Eugene du Pont, 62-year old president of Du Pont Company, failed to appear at his office. He had a cold, it was reported. One week later he was dead.
Eugene’s death from pneumonia was more than just a personal shock to his family. It was also a business crisis, perhaps the greatest the family had ever faced.
