12.1. Home Network Media

The general rule for home networks is that it must be self-installed by a novice home owner, and this means no new wires run between rooms. There are some persons who have the technical aptitude to install new Category 5 wiring themselves or the willingness to hire a professional installer. In the past, these persons have often installed an Ethernet LAN using twisted wire pairs between rooms, as is common in business offices. However, with the advent of low-cost and high-performance wireless LANs and other new home network techniques, there is no need for even the most sophisticated homeowner to undertake the rewiring of an existing house.
