THE ENVIRONMENTS

Gary and Claire discuss the process they want to use to build their site. They want to work together, at the same time, on the same installation of the site. This means a site installed on their individual computers is not going to work for them; they need a hosting service.

They also decide to keep the development environment simple but secure. Neither Gary nor Claire is a software developer, so they don't have the skills to work in the various developer-oriented applications. For instance, they need to access and manage their web server using a graphical user interface (GUI) control panel, not a command-line interface.

Also, they want to be able to run multiple versions of the site in the same hosting environment (same server): development, training, and production (live). Therefore, the hosting service needs to be able to host multiple instances of the site under different domains.

In addition to allowing multiple sites, the hosting service needs to allow Gary and Claire to:

  • Support multiple sites with multiple databases
  • Provide domains and subdomains quickly and at a reasonable price
  • Select the version of PHP and MySQL they want to use and provide support installing it
  • Increase the PHP memory allocation above the default provided with the hosting plan, as needed
  • Provide multiple user logins for the same account
  • Provide Secure FTP access
  • Provide technical support 24/7
  • Maintain a regular backup service
