Managing Open Source Projects

Managing the production and operations of a CMS-based website has many facets. Managing a project that uses an open source CMS introduces some unique challenges that you might not have to consider otherwise. For instance, you don't have control over when updates are released for Drupal or its many contributed modules.

This chapter is not going to teach you how to be a project manager. Rather, it offers some insights into how using an open source CMS might require you to adjust the way you manage the production of your site. This chapter considers two perspectives of project management:

  • Development methods
  • The nine knowledge areas called out in the Project Management Institute's Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)

By the end of this chapter, you should be able to recognize:

  • Different methods for managing the various tasks performed during the production process (needs analysis, requirements, design, development, and implementation)
  • How open source technology can influence various project management tasks
