The output of a Drupal theme

When you visit a website powered by Drupal, what you see on the screen is the result of the site's active theme files. The theme's various files contain the functions that produce the data and also set the styling, position, and placement of the data on your screen. A lot of work for a small group of files.

When creating the theme, the designer designates areas inside the layout to fulfill various functions. For example, in a typical three-column theme, the center column is used to hold the primary content whereas the two smaller side columns contain secondary information. Screen space within each of those areas is also allocated according to the designer's priorities.
