Drupal's core system provides powerful content management functionality, but no eCommerce options. Site owners looking to add products and online sales to their Drupal Web sites must add contributed modules to achieve that functionality; most turn to the Ubercart module.

Ubercart is a powerful eCommerce plugin tailored to run on Drupal. The system is rich in features and includes everything you need to get an online storefront up and running in a single package.

In this chapter, I look at Ubercart and what you can do with it; then I take you through the basics of installing and configuring the module. I close the chapter with a look at some of the useful extensions you can use to further enhance the Ubercart system.

Another interesting option is Drupal Commerce. At that time this was written the system was still in alpha but promises to be an attractive option for Drupal 7. You can learn more by visiting http://drupal.org/project/commerce.

Understanding Ubercart

Ubercart is a full-featured eCommerce system built on top of the Drupal platform. Ubercart is built entirely of Drupal modules, so it first requires a functioning Drupal Web site upon which you can install the core Ubercart package.
