The study of human infant behavior took a significant step forward when researchers learned they could discern a great deal about babies’ mental activity by carefully recording their eye movements with high-speed videocameras. This methodology is completely benign. It causes no stress for the tiny children—they seem to treat it like a game. But it reveals a great deal. These studies of eye movements can demonstrate the abilities of infants so newly born that these abilities cannot possibility have been learned. They must be innate.
