Artists and their visions of the city

An important artist involved in representing the city is Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–78), who was born near Treviso in Italy and studied architecture, etching, and engraving. He produced a series of views of the city in 1743, based on his experiences of Rome. Many of Piranesi’s engravings are of imaginary environments and spaces within the city, images that are distorted, spaces suggesting incarceration and nightmare that explore the interplay of light and form and appear as extraordinary infinite labyrinthine caves.
