INTRODUCTION

Possibly the simplest, cheapest, and most fundamental instrument at an artist’s disposal is the pencil. Merely a piece of graphite used to make markings on paper, the pencil provides the cornerstone of any artist’s creativity. The size of the pencil makes it extremely portable; together with a small pad of paper, it is the perfect tool for sketching while on the move. Because of its versatility, it can serve to roughly outline a painting or to create fantastic and intricate artwork in its own right.
