CONCENTRATING ON VALUES

When rendering a long, shiny coat of a middle value (such as that of this long-haired Dachshund), study the reference and note even the subtlest change in value—expressing these changes in your drawing will keep your subject from appearing flat and two-dimensional. Try squinting your eyes while viewing your reference, as this can help you see the highlights and shadows much easier.
