Computers create virtual models: astonishingly accurate, three-dimensional representations of interiors that may be rotated in virtual space and viewed from whichever angle the designer chooses – either to inform the creative process or to communicate ideas to clients and colleagues. Such images are convincing – up to a point. However, whether on screen or on paper, they lack a sense of spatial volume. They remain essentially two-dimensional and, while the eye and mind can respond to the implication of depth and space, the ‘real’ distance between planes is not tangible.
