WORKING IN A SERIES IS A GREAT WAY TO BUILD A LARGE BODY OF WORK

In 2002, I painted 1,000 tiny faces and hung them all over the lobby of a local theater. Looking back, I see now that it was more installation than anything else; each little face taken separately was nice, but as a whole, an overwhelming whole, they made a show.

Since then, I’ve had the desire to do another installation project but hadn’t been able to decide how to begin, as I didn’t want to paint them on paper like I did the faces show. (They turned out to be too fragile unframed and, well, who wants to frame 1,000 3-inch [7.6 cm] paintings?) ...
