My natural tendency is to work very simply, with limited supplies; some of my favorite pieces ever are drawings done with a single piece of charcoal! At the same time, I admire the rich, layered artwork of so many of my mixed-media friends and the way they pile the media on: colored pencils, markers, charcoal, graphite, paint . . . . Looking around one day for something to get me moving in this direction, I decided this little grasshopper wood carving from Oaxaca would provide excellent inspiration.
