One morning at a local restaurant, I struck up a conversation with a fellow diner who had sat down to breakfast with her picture-perfect young son. The problem, she lamented, was that after she had caved into his begging to come all the way there to order their legendary pancakes, he had taken two bites and refused to eat any more.
