Chapter 17. IMAP Mail Service

Domino is optionally an IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol, version 4, rev. 1) mail server. As an IMAP server, it can receive and store mail for users of IMAP mail client programs, then interact with the IMAP clients on request. It monitors TCP port 143.

IMAP does not provide a method for users to send mail, only to receive it. IMAP clients typically use SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) to send mail, connecting to an SMTP relay host to do so. The SMTP relay host may be the same computer as runs IMAP or a different one. Because the Domino router uses SMTP, Domino can provide the outgoing mail service for its IMAP mail clients.
