Visit a Hill Station

The British coined the term hill station years ago. It refers to a cool getaway in the hills. When the Indian heat gets to you, these spots are great for some R and R. You have a vast selection of hill stations from which to choose, but if you’re the adventurous sort, take the road less traveled. Visit some places which aren’t high on the tourist list (though high enough in altitude), and you’ll be rewarded with peace and quiet as well as cool weather. The lesser-known hill stations include Chamba, Dalhousie, Coonoor, Kotagiri, Mercara, Horsely Hills, and Haflong.

One sight you won’t want to miss is the blooming of the Kurunji, a bluish purple flower that covers the Nilgiris mountains on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border and gives the hills (translated as Blue Mountains) their name. The plants bloom just once in twelve years, and if you happen to be in India for the next bloom period, do yourself a favor and make a visit to the Nilgiris.
