Implementing a Useful Demonstration

Indians appreciate being shown how to do a task correctly, so take advantage of that tendency. If your business requires that something be done in a very specific way, set up a demonstration so your Indian team knows exactly what to do.

A major automotive manufacturer wanted to stress the importance of precisely painting its cars, so the plant manager came in to do a live car-painting demonstration for the Indian plant employees. He wore his overalls and showed everyone how to correctly paint one of the company’s cars. This session had a positive effect on two levels—it showed the manager’s respect for the work the Indian employees would be doing, and it also made clear the fact that the manager had the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job right. The Indians were impressed and inspired, and the session was a great success.

If you show your workers how to do a job correctly and with a sense of accountability, they gladly imitate you and work at a high level. After all, isn’t imitation the sincerest form of flattery?
