APPLYING ATMOSPHERIC PERSPECTIVE

When including a background scene in a drawing, you will want to employ the rules of atmospheric perspective to create the illusion of distance. The rules of atmospheric perspective state that, due to particles in the air, objects in the distance appear less distinct and with softer edges than they would if in the foreground. For this drawing, I’ve chosen to complement the close-up of a Border Collie’s face with a background that portrays the Border Collie herding sheep in a pasture. Notice how the background elements are lighter in value and less detailed—a perfect example of atmospheric perspective!
