Selling

“Selling” in the context of documentary films can mean a lot of things, including negotiations that happen when a project is complete or nearing completion. This chapter is talking about selling as part of how you position your film to others. This might mean convincing a top-notch cinematographer to work with you, an executive producer to give you a “green light” (and resources) to start shooting, or a funding agency to give you a grant. It might also mean finding a convincing way to share your vision of how a story should be told with all the many people it takes, at all levels, to get a documentary made. In many cases, a way to do that is with a document known as a treatment.
