Top Speed Racing

Cars built for maximum speed need minimum drag, if the rules allow it. Some classes don’t allow body mods at all, but lowering the car and changing the wheels are fair game. One very distinctive touch on top speed cars is the nearly flat aluminum wheel covers to reduce the drag created by the wheels, usually combined with skinny tires for less rolling friction. Classes that allow more body mods start with letting in airdams or scoops and cowl hoods, much like drag cars. More extreme classes allow lowering the roofline or extending the nose. The top “special construction” classes were never production cars to begin with, and often look like Buck Rogers rockets on wheels.
