Shock Absorbers

Imagine gluing one end of a Slinky to the ceiling and the other end to a tennis ball. Raise the tennis ball up to the ceiling and release it. If there is enough room for the ball to drop before hitting the floor, the tennis ball will bounce up and down for a long time before coming to rest.

If a car had no shock absorbers, it would behave in the same way as that tennis ball. Shock absorbers damp out the vibrations caused by using springs to support a car. This not only makes for a much more comfortable ride, but allows the tires to be firmly planted on the ground and keeps the car under control.
