Gearing
After the transmission, the drivetrain uses another set of gears to reduce the speed to one suitable for driving the wheels. The ratio of these gears is known as the final drive ratio. On many rear-wheel-drive cars, it is possible to buy gears with different ratios. The larger the number used to express the gear ratio, the higher an RPM your engine will turn at any particular speed. Gears with larger numbers are better suited to high-winding engines and letting a car accelerate hard off the line, but overdoing things may mean your car runs out of RPM at the end of a drag race. Gears with smaller numbers work better for relaxed cruising if you do not have an overdrive transmission.
