Cooling System
Unless you have an older Porsche, Corvair, or VW Beetle, you probably have a watercooled engine. These engines use a water pump to circulate water through the engine block and cylinder head to carry away engine heat. The pump circulates hot water mixed with antifreeze to a radiator to release the heat, and then returns it to the engine. The engine does need to reach a certain temperature to run efficiently and keep its oil clean. A temperature-operated valve called a thermostat closes when the engine is too cold, allowing the engine to warm up.
